Daly Waters to Mataranka

Daly Waters was the first International airport in Australia set up for the London to Sydney air race by the men who founded QANTAS. Approx 500km from Darwin it was also used during the war.

A certain Danish friend of ours raced motorbikes along the air strip here about 15 yrs ago

I'm supposed to be a traffic controller in case you didn't know what I was doing!

An interesting stop at the Elsey cemetery. The Elsey Station and homestead were just down the road. This is where Jeannie Gunn lived for a year before she wrote "We of the Never Never " and "Little Black Princess" She is buried in Melbourne but a lot of the characters from the book who were station hands plus her husband are buried here. A brigadier from the army in WWII relocated bodies from river banks etc & buried them here together. It is now looked after by the National Trust NT. it makes me want to reread the books now after being here.

I can't help keep thinking how did they do it in the 1900's? To survive out here wearing Edwardian clothing in the heat as well as coping with lack of facilities would be enough to do you in.

A welcome dip from the hot day in the hot springs. The water was 33deg but surprisingly it did cool you off. This was in flood 3 weeks ago but crystal clear today. You float down with the gentle current for 30 mts, climb out & do it again. We floated around here for an hour or so. There is lots of algae on the edges & plant life on the river bed but the water is clear as can be.
