Karanjini National Park

Next stop Karanjini National Park where we caught up with friends from Broome, crossed paths in Marble Bar & found Noel & Pat here. Nice happy hour again! Great camp site, we chose the "genny" area to keep our car fridge topped up as we stocked up on some nice WA meat in Broome from Yeeda Meats. A company growing, slaughtering, butchering & selling their own product.

The walk into the gorge was once again another natural wonder. The way the rocks in the lower levels are formed & layered is uncanny in the precision of the thickness & shape on the ground. Above the layers huge mounds of rocks are piled on top forming the top of the gorge walls.

Trees cling to crevices & grow in the water & soil collected in hollows & cracks.

Wildflowers are pushing through & flourishing despite the harsh terrain. Uncannily the mauves of the flowers match the cliff colours when viewed from a distance as does the myriad of yellow flowering varieties match the ochre of the soil & rocks.

Clear Pools " Circular Pool" & "Ferny Pool", at each end of the gorge are tempting for a swim but the water temperature didn't appeal to us woosses from QLD. Three Europeans dived in at Circular Pool & even they could be heard whooping as the cold took their breath.

The intrepid explorers

One thing that is done well in WA & NT is the cultural centres in the national parks. The building here is designed in a configuration of the shape of a Goanna. The steel structure rusted to the colour of the earth is formed with curved interconnecting walls. While contemporary in concept the rusty colour & shape of the building lets it sit well blended into country millions of years old.

The entry into the Cultural Centre

A couple of "happy hours" with Pat & Noel & then it is time to move on to Tom Price for some more exploring. Will catch up again there as our paths cross once more.
